Critical Incident at Round 3 of Australian Motocross Championship

Motorcycling Australia (MA) would like to confirm that rider Andrew McFarlane was involved in a critical on-track incident at the third round of the 2010 Australian Motocross Championship at Broadford on Sunday 2 May.

McFarlane received immediate treatment from medical staff at the track.

MA and Victoria Police are now both investigating the incident.

MA, Williams Event Management, and JDR Motorsport would like to express their sincerest condolences to the entire McFarlane family.

Motorcycling Australia (MA) have confirmed that JDR Motorsports KTM rider Andrew McFarlane was involved in a critical on-track incident at the third round of the 2010 Australian Motocross Championship at Broadford on Sunday 2 May and has passed away.

McFarlane received immediate treatment from medical staff at the track but he passed away du to his injuries.

MA and Victoria Police are now both investigating the incident.

MA, Williams Event Management, and JDR Motorsport would like to express their sincerest condolences to the entire McFarlane family.

Andrew McFarlane was a former Australian Motocross and Supercross Champion. He also finished second in the World Motocross Championship. MacFarlane had recently returned from racing in America to race the Australian scene before retiring.

Andrew McFarlane is survived by his wife Natalie and young daughter

FORMER world No.2 Andrew McFarlane was killed in an accident at the national motocross championship in Victoria today.

Queenslander MacFarlane, 33, suffered head injuries when he crashed after becoming airborne on a practice lap at the State Motorcycle Sports Complex at Broadford, north of Melbourne.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said paramedics worked for about an hour to try to revive him, but McFarlane died at the scene.

McFarlane returned to Australia last year to race on home turf after nine years competing on the world motocross circuit in Europe and the US.

He claimed his world number two ranking in 2005.

Officials cancelled the third round of the MX Nationals after the accident which occurred about 9.30am.
Motorcycling Australia (MA) confirmed the incident in a statement.

"McFarlane received immediate treatment from medical staff at the track,'' the statement said.

"MA and Victoria Police are now both investigating the incident.

"MA, Williams Event Management, and JDR Motorsport would like to express their sincerest condolences to the entire McFarlane family.''

MacFarlane was running fifth in the 2010 MX Nationals ahead of today's event.

The event's website says 2010 was likely to be McFarlane's final year racing.

"I've been very fortunate in my career,'' McFarlane said on the site.

"I've raced in Russia, all over Europe, Japan, and the Unites States, it's been an awesome experience and after 27 years I have a lot of knowledge and experience to share.''
